Nax is ideally suited for sight-seeing and many places of interest may be visited in a day. The mountain villages have preserved their individual customs and each has its own character. Many have very old buildings and churches. The main towns of the valley, (Sion, Martigny, Brig, etc.), are of historical interest. Crans Montana, Sion and Verbier are all within easy reach and have many 'up-market' boutiques, jeweler, etc.

Most of the major mountains of the Alps (Matterhorn, Eiger, Mont Blanc, etc.) may be visited in a day. Many cable cars operate in summer as well as winter. The dams at the head of some of the valleys, particularly the Grand Dixence, are very spectacular.

The Valaisian capital of Sion is about 8 miles from Nax. Sion is a very picturesque part medieval city but also has all the normal modern facilities and a direct rail link to Geneva airport. Sion is also a music teaching centre, has the oldest known working organ and plays host to various festivals.

The lakes at Geneva and around Interlaken are within driving distance and of course Geneva itself which is a very interesting city. Other places of interest include the Gd. St. Bernard and Simplon passes, the spa towns of Leukerbad and Evian, the pyramids at Euseigne and the caves of St. Léonard.

For the nature lover the area abounds with alpine flowers and butterflies. The local Hérens valley is one of the most unspoiled and beautiful of all the Swiss valleys. There are many protected flora and fauna locations in the area including the Val de Réchy just a few miles away. Réchy is of national importance as it has some unique Swiss species.

Other physical activities include mountain biking, paragliding and hang-gliding, white-water rafting, tennis and golf (including the championship course at Crans Montana).
In the summer, this area of Switzerland is an ideal alternative to the beach for a 'lazing about in the sun holiday. Hérens has a quite unique character for Switzerland as it somehow manages to combine the past & present without the incursion of commercialism some prevalent in the more well known areas.
